Adaptive eating utensils

What is the product?

Handi Accessories specializes in creating adaptive tools for individuals with disabilities.  These aids help people who have limited dexterity regain their ability to perform basic life skills. For many people with disabilities, even something as common as eating independently can be difficult.  For this review, I’ll be focusing on just a few of the Handi Accessories adaptive tools including their adaptive utensils and workout cuff.

I have used a wide variety of aids since breaking my neck 15 years ago.  Some tools that I use almost daily are a hook to help button my shirts, as well as an adaptive workout cuff.  While many of these tools are quite useful, their quality and features can vary greatly across brands.  I have had aids last 10 years and others that only lasted 10 uses.  I’m excited to see how these Handi Accessories tools stack up against the competition.  Let’s check them out!

Trying them out

Is there a better way to try out a fork and knife than to eat a meal?  I wanted to put these utensils to the test so I decided to take a stab (pun intended) at a particularly difficult dish to eat for someone with dexterity issues– a delicious chicken breast.  Cutting small bites off a single piece of meat is so challenging that when I’m dining alone, I simply act like a caveman and rip chunks of the meat off with my teeth.  This is not ideal.

Using the Handi Accessories utensils was a breeze.  It was easy to slip my fingers underneath the velcro, and strap it on.  Once each utensil was secured to my hands, it was much easier to cut and eat my food without constantly worrying about dropping a utensil or being sliced by the knife.  Here are my thoughts on these tools:

  • The knife is incredibly sharp, and that’s fantastic
  • Useful that each utensil can be removed from the grip to be washed in the dishwasher
  • The velcro on the back could be a little thicker

What’s the verdict?

Handi Accessories understands the needs of their customers, and their tools do exactly what they are supposed to do.  The utensils are easy to use, easy to clean, and easy to maintain.  If you’d like to know more about their products, visit their website!
