I was recently asked this question and thought it would good information for the blog readers:

How do you secure the powered wheelchair?

As with many things that have to do with wheelchairs and wheelchair vans, there is no “one size fits all” answer.  Depending on where you will be sitting in the van is one consideration when talking about wheelchair securement.  Another thing to take into account is if you require the assistance from someone or will you be an independent driver?

There are two main companies that make wheelchair securements; EZ Lock and Q’Straint.  Both have a lot of information on their Web sites; www.ezlock.net and https://www.qstraint.com  There are devices that are used for people who will be positioned in the middle of an accessible vehicle and these are retractable systems.  These devices typically require the assistance of a caregiver.  The most popular securement for people who will sit in their wheelchair in either the driver or passenger position is an automatic locking base.  When using the automatic locking base; you guide your wheelchair into the docking base until the interfacing bracket attached to the wheelchair locks securely into place.

Both of these types of devices can be discussed and demonstrated with any local Mobility Equipment Dealer.  To locate dealers in your area, you can contact NMEDA at 800-833-0427 or visit them on the Internet http://www.nmeda.org/.
